CONFIRMED: ChatGPT will show visual ads during image generation

OpenAI confirmed a new visual ad format inside ChatGPT that appears during image generation, with tests starting this month in the United States. The company also expanded measurement partnerships with names like AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, and LiveRamp, deepening ChatGPT's reliance on ad revenue.

From subscription to ad, one more revenue layer

OpenAI confirmed in an official announcement a new visual ad format inside ChatGPT that will appear during the image generation process. Testing starts later in October, initially in the United States, with a restricted group of advertisers. The company says ChatGPT already reaches 1.2 billion people a week, which it calls the world's largest AI native consumer platform, and treats advertising as a way to sustain that reach without relying on subscriptions alone.

How the ad shows up without breaking the image

Based on what OpenAI described, the ad sits apart from the image the user asked to generate and carries a clear label, showing related products or services alongside what is being created, through inspiration, usage, or lifestyle imagery. The company states that advertising does not influence ChatGPT's answers or the generated image's content, preserving the separation it has tried to keep in other ad formats launched throughout the year.

What changes for advertisers

The announcement comes with an expansion of measurement tools: integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp for sending conversion data, plus attribution partnerships with AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, and other industry platforms. OpenAI also cited early partner results: Weight Watchers reportedly saw a 15.3 percent lower cost per acquisition than its blended paid search benchmark according to DV Rockerbox, and wellness brand Dose logged a statistically significant lift in purchases attributed to ChatGPT Ads according to WorkMagic. These are figures supplied by measurement partners OpenAI itself contracted, not independent audits.

The limit OpenAI itself admits

The company says this is an early test, restricted to selected advertisers, with no disclosed timeline for expanding to other markets. It also states it will test brand suitability partnerships with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to check whether its brand safety rules are being applied correctly, without access to users' private conversations. That means control over where and how the ad appears still depends on OpenAI's internal process, audited by outside partners only in a limited way.

MaxAssistant's read

ChatGPT stopped being just a text assistant a while ago, it is already a shopping showcase, and now it also becomes an advertising showcase inside the very flow of visual creation, one of the tool's fastest growing uses. Choosing to test precisely inside image generation is no accident: it is the moment when the user is already thinking about product, aesthetics, and consumption desire, classic advertising territory. What remains to be seen is whether the ad label truly stays separate from the creative experience once the business model pushes for more clicks.
