CONFIRMED: Grok Bot turns into a router and starts using Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney and Suno

Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceXAI's flagship agent now picks the best model for each task, bringing Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney and Suno into the mix inside the same SuperGrok and Cursor subscription.

When the model maker picks a rival's model

Grok Bot, the always-on agent from SpaceXAI, the company formerly known as xAI and now merged with SpaceX, just turned into a multi-model router. On October 6, Elon Musk posted on X that the agent will use the best available model for any given task, including names from outside the house. The line sounds simple, but it carries a rare tension in the artificial intelligence market: a company that poured resources into training its own model is saying, in a post with more than 35 million views, that the strongest engine for its flagship agent product comes from a direct competitor.

The announcement: heavy reasoning moves to Claude Opus 5.5

Musk wrote: “Going forward, @SpaceX will use the best back end model for any given task, including Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney, Suno and other leading APIs. Whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome.” The same day, Lauren, from the Grok Bot team at SpaceXAI, confirmed in replies that all bots are now powered by Anthropic's Opus 5.5, and that the harness can also call cloud agents using Cursor models. In practice, Grok Bot stops relying only on Grok 4.7, launched by SpaceXAI itself in September and trained specifically for this kind of agent, and starts splitting work by specialty: heavy reasoning to Opus 5.5, image generation to Midjourney, music and audio to Suno.

The backdrop: a multibillion dollar compute deal

Musk's public praise for Claude did not come out of nowhere. Filings from Anthropic's IPO process cite a compute agreement between SpaceX and Anthropic, with commitments in the tens of billions of dollars through 2029. That does not prove the routing to Opus 5.5 is a direct consequence of the contract, but it helps explain why it makes business sense for SpaceX to publicly praise a major commercial partner's technology, even while keeping its own Grok 4.7 on the shelf.

What changes for SuperGrok and Cursor users

For anyone subscribed to Grok Bot through SuperGrok plans or Cursor, the practical effect is direct: indirect access to Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney and Suno inside the same subscription, without paying for separate API access to any of those companies. That includes small and medium businesses that already use Grok Bot for automation and content production and now get Anthropic grade reasoning plus two of the market's strongest image and audio generators inside the same workflow, at no extra cost.

What is still unanswered

Musk did not detail a rollout timeline or the exact criteria deciding which model handles which task. He also did not explain how conversation data sent to these third party APIs will be handled from a privacy standpoint, a point users raised in replies to the post without getting a public answer by the time this story was reported. For anyone running Grok Bot with sensitive customer data, that is the question that needs an answer before trusting a critical task to the router.

MaxAssistant's take

This case reinforces a trend already visible at other major players: picking the best model for each task is becoming standard architecture, even inside companies that sell their own model. Brand loyalty matters less and less than the result per task. But routing to a third party model without clarity on privacy and timeline is a stage promise, not a testable delivery; it is worth using the added capability without feeding it sensitive data until SpaceXAI answers the questions still on the table.
