OpenAI's Agents Cross 10 Million Users, Between Codex and the New ChatGPT Work

According to Bloomberg, on July 21, 2026 OpenAI revealed that Codex and the new ChatGPT Work together count 10 million users, nearly double from earlier that month, a sign AI agents have moved beyond the coding niche.

OpenAI's Agents Cross 10 Million Users, Between Codex and the New ChatGPT Work

OpenAI revealed, according to a Bloomberg report published July 21, 2026, that its two flagship agent products, Codex, focused on coding, and ChatGPT Work, recently launched for a wider mix of workplace tasks, together count 10 million users, nearly double the figure recorded earlier that month.

What ChatGPT Work Actually Is

ChatGPT Work brings Codex's capabilities into the workplace, available on web, mobile and desktop. According to OpenAI, the agent gathers context from the apps, files and workflows a user selects, and turns that information into finished deliverables such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations and web applications. The agent can stay on a single project for hours without constant intervention, running on GPT-5.6, launched July 9, 2026.

A Rollout in Layers

ChatGPT Work began reaching Pro, Enterprise and Edu subscribers first, on both web and mobile, with Plus and Business users gaining access in the following days, according to OpenAI and reporting from eWeek.

From Developer Tool to Office Product

Codex started as a developer focused tool, but the jump to nearly double its user count in just a few weeks shows the AI agent audience is no longer limited to people who code. With ChatGPT Work, OpenAI is targeting any office worker willing to hand an entire task, not just a question, to an agent that acts on its own for hours.

Why It Matters to Anyone Selling Customer Service and Marketing Automation

For agencies and SMBs offering automation as a service, the 10 million agent user mark signals a behavioral shift: end customers and in house staff are already growing used to handing a full task to an AI agent, not just asking a chatbot a question. That raises the bar of expectation for any automation product an agency offers, while also opening commercial room for whoever knows how to position their offer alongside this fast growing behavior.

What's Clear

The race for AI agents that complete entire tasks, not just answer questions, has gained real, measurable traction in just a few weeks. The pressure now falls on Google, Anthropic and xAI to show equivalent adoption numbers for their own agent products, in a rivalry that has stopped being just about which model is strongest and become about which company can get the most people actually delegating work to an AI.
