CONFIRMED: Google retires Gemini Gems, migrating everything to Skills in November

Automatic migration starts November 17, but Skills still can't replicate Gems' video, music, Canvas and Deep Research, and hasn't reached Europe yet.

Google confirms the end of Gems, pushing users toward Skills

Google has confirmed, on an official Gemini support page, that Gems, the customizable assistants launched in 2024, will be discontinued and replaced by a new layer called Skills. Starting November 17, 2026, personal Google accounts will begin having their Gems automatically migrated. Workspace business and enterprise accounts follow in March 2027, and education accounts in June 2027. Alongside Gems, Google will also shut down Opal, its mini app building experiment, and public Gems by Google Labs, all in the same November window.

What actually changes for people automating with Gemini

Gems worked like a fixed character: you set instructions, attached knowledge files and picked a default tool, such as image generation or Canvas, then called on that assistant whenever needed. Skills follow a different logic. Instead of opening a specific assistant, you type a slash in the middle of any Gemini chat and invoke the saved instruction right there, without switching tabs. You can stack more than one Skill in the same task, and Gemini itself can decide when to apply a relevant Skill even if you did not ask for it. For anyone using Gems as a customer service script, a proposal generator or a content standardizer, that means less navigation friction, but also less predictability about when the automation kicks in.

The fine print that can hurt current Gems users

Google promises automatic migration and says no Gem will be lost, but its own help page lists real gaps in the transition. For now, Skills do not work with features many Gems rely on by default: video generation, music generation, Canvas, Deep Research and guided learning mode are all left out until further notice, with no confirmed parity date. Skills also depend on Gemini Spark, Google's proactive task layer, and today are restricted to personal accounts for people over 18, still not rolled out in bulk to work and school accounts even though the discontinuation timeline already applies to them. On top of that, there is a geographic exclusion already inherited from Spark: Skills are not available in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland or Nigeria.

Why this matters beyond a menu reshuffle

Swapping Gems for Skills is not just cosmetic. It pushes Gemini down the same path Meta, OpenAI and xAI are already following: fewer standalone, named assistants, and more of a single agent that reads context and triggers background automation on its own. The timing is not a coincidence either: the change lands the same week Google finished wiping Google Assistant off Android phones, fully forcing the migration to Gemini as the system's default voice. This is a product consolidation move, not an isolated feature, and it reduces the number of surfaces Google has to maintain, at the cost of forcing people who already had a working flow to adapt within a timeline that still has missing pieces.

MaxAssistant's take

Small and medium businesses that used Gems as an automation shortcut, for support, content generation or process standardization, have until November to decide: let the automatic migration run and accept temporarily losing features like Canvas and video generation inside that flow, or manually recreate each Gem as a Skill now, with full control over the outcome. Anyone relying on video, music or Deep Research inside a customized assistant should keep a backup plan until Google confirms feature parity. One extra warning applies to operations in Europe and the UK: Skills simply do not exist there yet, creating a real functional gap between markets while Gems are still running.
