CONFIRMED: Musk says Grok 4.8 will finish training and enter RL this week
Elon Musk said that Grok 4.8, a 2.5 trillion parameter model trained with xAI's new C++ software stack, will finish pretraining this week and begin reinforcement learning. The post is a direct statement from xAI's founder, so the training milestone is confirmed. What it does not confirm is a launch date, public API access, a final model name, or any benchmark result.
The important word is not release, it is transition
Grok 4.8 has not been announced as available to users in the post. The statement places the model between pretraining and RL, the phase in which xAI can shape behavior, tool use, persistence, safety, and performance on difficult tasks. That distinction matters because a model completing pretraining is still a research artifact. It may need several rounds of reinforcement learning, evaluation, red teaming, serving work, and product decisions before anyone can call it a public release.
The scale claim is notable, but not yet a capability claim
The 2.5 trillion parameter figure would make Grok 4.8 substantially larger than the sizes usually discussed for deployed models, but parameter count alone does not predict quality, cost, latency, or reliability. The other declared change is the training stack. Musk says the model uses a new C++ software stack, which points to an attempt to improve training efficiency and hardware utilization. Without technical measurements, it is impossible to say whether that choice translates into a better model or simply a cheaper path to train one.
Why the timing matters for xAI
The post arrived while the market was watching the next Grok 4.7 step, so 4.8 changes the conversation. xAI appears to be running overlapping model generations rather than waiting for one clean handoff. That can accelerate progress and keep a frontier lab in the news, but it also makes product planning harder. A model that is already in RL can still be weeks or months away from a stable endpoint, and the company has not stated how 4.8 relates to the versions currently available through its products and API.
What builders should do now
Nothing should be rewritten around Grok 4.8 yet. There is no public model ID, price, context limit, release window, or compatibility promise in the announcement. Teams can keep testing the live versions and watch for a documented endpoint, an API catalog entry, or a reproducible access report from users. Treat screenshots, benchmark claims, and supposed private previews as separate evidence until xAI confirms them.
My reading
This is a real signal, not a launch. The interesting part is the combination of scale and a custom training stack, but the commercial story remains unfinished. xAI is telling the market that the next generation is already moving through the pipeline, probably to hold attention while 4.7 is still unresolved. I would file Grok 4.8 as confirmed training progress and wait for an actual endpoint before assigning it a place in a product roadmap.
