STRONG SIGNAL: Gemini 3.8 Flash, code-named Skimaki, may ship this week
Editorial label: STRONG SIGNAL. Basis: a September 1, 2026 Wall Street Journal exclusive by Erin Woo, citing Google employees. DeepMind is said to release Gemini 3.8 Flash, internally called Skimaki, as soon as Wednesday, with a meaningful coding upgrade. In head-to-head tests inside Jetski, Google's internal coding tool, engineers reportedly preferred 3.8 Flash to Anthropic's Claude Opus. Google has not published an announcement, a public model ID, pricing, or a model card on AI Studio or Vertex. What we know
Gemini's Flash line is on a short cycle: 3.6 in July, 3.7 on August 13, and now a 3.8 in under three weeks. Earlier leaks already showed Gemini 3.8 Flash Preview on Jetski and the slug gemini-3.8-flash. Community reports talk about less slop and stronger coding. The WSJ frames the drop as an attempt to close Google's coding gap with OpenAI and Anthropic, under Koray Kavukcuoglu's mandate to ship faster. What we still do not know
There is no official Google statement. Exact day, price, context window, public API ID, and whether it lands in the Gemini app, AI Studio, or only Vertex remain open. The Opus preference is an internal Jetski test, not an independent benchmark. Gemini 3.5 Pro still has no date. This signal is about the cheap, fast Flash line, not the flagship.
Why it matters
If it ships, Google is reinforcing the cheap coding-and-agents workhorse, not the showcase model. Watch the official catalog over the next 48 hours. Do not treat an internal preference versus Opus as a market fact. Teams on 3.7 Flash in production should wait for an ID, a price, and their own Portuguese and tool-use tests before migrating.
